How Not to Read the Bible “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16), but what do we do with the passages in the Bible that are really difficult and a little crazy-sounding? Violence, slavery, the treatment of women—what the Bible has to say about these topics has, at times, been misinterpreted and misused. As valuable as it is, not all Bible reading is equal. There is a way to read, and not read, the Bible. Join us as we tackle some of the more questionable parts of Scripture and learn how context, culture, and right perspective are key to understanding Bible verses that sound bizarre today. We are currently in a series on the Gospel of Mark with author and speaker Francis Chan. The Gospel of Mark chronicles Jesus’s journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. Along the way, the Messiah gathers a ragged band of disciples. As crowds grow and dwindle on the road to Jerusalem, only a few stick by the suffering savior on the road of discipleship. Tracing the steps of Jesus and the Twelve through Israel, Francis explores the major themes of the Gospel of Mark, and asks: Are we willing to take this journey to embrace discipleship?
